COLLATERAL

DESCRIPTION

The Insulaphilia catalog encapsulates the Malta Biennale’s exploration of islands as spaces of connection, identity, and transformation. Featuring essays by curators Sofia Baldi Pighi, Emma Mattei, and Elisa Carollo, it offers a deep dive into the thematic and artistic framework of the first edition of the Biennale. The catalog opens with the curatorial statement by the Artistic Director and provides an in-depth overview of the four curatorial sections of the Main Pavilion, along with detailed descriptions of all the featured artworks and artists. It also includes curatorial texts from the national and thematic pavilions that participated in this landmark first edition, offering a comprehensive view of the Biennale’s diverse perspectives. Contributions from scientific partners, such as the Università Orientale di Napoli and its PhD program in Postcolonial and Gender Studies, provide critical insights into migration, hybridity, and decolonial narratives. Anthropologist Franco La Cecla adds a provocative layer, weaving anthropological perspectives with cultural critique. Published by Heritage Malta Publishing House with the patronage of UNESCO, the catalog is richly illustrated and celebrates the Biennale’s site-specific installations and performances across Malta’s historic and natural landmarks.
