As part of the Malta Biennale 2024, New York-based lens-based artist Joseph Cochran II led a workshop designed for children aged 8 to 10. Cochran, renowned for his deep exploration of advanced industrial societies and their impacts, guided young participants through an interactive session aimed at exploring the intersections of globalization and Maltese identity through art. The workshop introduced children to the fundamentals of photography, teaching them how to observe and document their environment with a critical eye. Inspired by Cochran’s own practice—which spans photography, video, and archival research—the workshop urged children to create photographs that blend documentary with personal reflection, while touching on elements of anthropology and philosophy. The children explored how globalization affects their local culture and learned to express these ideas visually, developing a greater awareness of their place within global systems. With a playful yet reflective approach, Cochran encouraged participants to think deeply about how globalization shapes their surroundings and to discover how local Maltese culture fits within the broader global narrative.
